Hurricane Shutters Frequently Asked Questions

For ultimate convenience and strength, motorized roll-down shutters are the gold standard. However, for coastal homes in our region, impact-rated Bahama and Colonial shutters are often considered “best” because they combine heavy-duty protection with permanent, high-end curb appeal.
Aluminum is the preferred choice for our coastal clients because it is lightweight, easy to operate, and naturally resistant to salt-air corrosion. Galvanized steel offers exceptional impact strength but is significantly heavier and more prone to rust over time if the coating is compromised.
In the Southeastern NC and Northeastern SC regions–including Wilmington, Oak Island, Jacksonville, Topsail, Myrtle Beach, and Pawleys Island–you should look for a local specialized dealer like American Hurricane Shutters that builds to local wind-load codes.
Removable aluminum storm panels are consistently the most budget-friendly hurricane protection option. They provide robust defense at a lower price point than permanent systems like accordions or roll-downs.
Powder-coated aluminum Bahama or Colonial shutters are ideal for beachfront homes. They are specifically engineered to withstand the intense salt spray and high wind speeds of the immediate coast without rotting or warping.
To be effective, shutters must overlap the window opening by at least 1 to 2 inches on each side (depending on the style) to ensure they anchor into the home’s structural framing rather than just the window trim.
While you can DIY simple storm panels, we strongly recommend professional installation for permanent systems like Bahama or accordion shutters. Professionals ensure the shutters are code-compliant, properly anchored, and eligible for insurance discounts.
A typical professional installation for a full home generally ranges from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the shutter type and the number of windows. Some of our largest jobs have been over $200,000!
Yes. All exterior shutters provide a “thermal barrier” that can reduce solar heat gain by 30-50%. Bahama shutters are particularly effective at this because they act as permanent awnings even when open.
Roll-downs are permanently installed and deploy in seconds via a motor or a bit longer via manual crank. Storm panels are removable, require physical storage, and can take several hours (or a full day) to manually bolt onto the house before a storm.
A professional crew can typically outfit an average home in 1 to 3 days, depending on the complexity of the system (e.g., motorized roll-downs take longer than basic panels). However, it will take 2 or more months to have the shutters custom fabricated before the install even takes place.
Look for a warranty that specifically guarantees future service and clearly delineated terms. Most shutters are not warrantied against them being damaged by flying debris (i.e. during a hurricane)- but ensure it covers malfunctions, specific shutter parts (the electric motor). Ensure it is with a reputable company, so that you can be certain that they will service it in the future.
Coastal shutters should be rinsed with fresh water every few weeks to remove salt buildup. You should also lubricate the tracks and/or hinges with a dry lubricant spray at least twice a year to ensure smooth operation. Washing them deeply twice a year is also recommmended. Check Out our Maintenance Guide for more specifics.
Yes. Most insurance companies in North and South Carolina offer “wind mitigation” credits for homes with impact-rated, professionally installed shutters.
Bahama/Colonial: High aesthetic appeal; moderate-to-high protection.
Roll-down: Aluminum or Screen (Kevlar). Sleek/hidden; maximum protection and convenience.
Accordion: Practical for large openings; high protection.
Panels: Low aesthetic (removable); high protection.
Specialized manufacturers like American Hurricane Shutters can custom-build aluminum shutters to fit arches, circles, and other irregular window shapes that standard panels cannot cover.
Labor for a simple “put up/take down” service typically ranges from $100 to $250 per opening, though this varies based on the height and accessibility of the window and complexity of the shutter.
Not at all. For 2025, shutters remain a top trend for their timeless look and energy-saving properties, though modern preferences have shifted toward wider louvers and clean, neutral finishes. Our Bahama shutters can give the same effect, but add exterior curb appeal to your home.
The main drawbacks are the initial cost, the need for regular maintenance in coastal environments, and–for some styles–the permanent change to the home’s exterior look.
While you can leave the fixtures up, you should never leave panels or roll-downs fully closed year-round. It can be a fire safety hazard by blocking exits and traps heat and moisture against your windows. Also, on the coast non-moving shutters count potentially build up oxides or debris and be unable to open after extended periods of closure.
Aluminum mill finish panels last the longest- as there is no coating to fail and damage to individual panels can be bent out or replaced. For less cumbersome styles- powder-coated aluminum shutters typically last the longest–often 20+ years–because they do not rot like wood, crack like vinyl, or rust like steel.
The primary alternatives are impact-resistant windows, hurricane-rated fabric (like Armor Screen or our kevlar-reinforced StormTex Screens by Alutech), or reinforced window films. Films are useless for true hurricanes and should be avoided. It is actually not legal to sell window film as hurricane protection in Florida since it simply prevents the window from shattering and does not transfer force to the framing. So it leaves your window able to be blown in, sucked out, and when an object hits it is will shatter more like a windshield on a car- but it will not add substansial protection except perhaps some safety defense against burglers and danger of broken glass.
High-quality aramid (Kevlar) hurricane fabric systems like our StormTex typically cost around $44 per square foot and must be installed by an authorized dealer. These are rolldown screens and can also be used for privacy, bug/rain protection, among other things.
